Goodnight America Lyrics
Over and over, so right wing that you might tip over
I need a hospital, I need a clinic
I need a reason not to be a cynic
I'm so straight, I'm so white
My God, I'll sleep well tonight
Look at this retard, he's so dumb
This is America, sucking on its thumb
[Pre-Chorus]
Let's fire up the electric chair
Three cheers for the billionaire
Coca-Cola and your favourite prayer
Goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
[Chorus]
One more night
Beneath the stars, beneath the stripes
One more night
Goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
Goodnight America
[Refrain]
(Woo)
(Woo)
Goodnight America
(Woo)
(Woo)
Over and over
We've got guns, you should all come over
Actually, just some of you, let's build a wall
Actually, I'm rich! So fuck you all
A thousand bullets, oh, what a sight
My God, I'll sleep well tonight
Ambien, Ambien, sing me to sleep
This is America, you are what you eat
[Pre-Chorus]
Let's fire up the electric chair
Three cheers for the billionaire
Coca-Cola and your favourite prayer
Goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
[Chorus]
One more night
Beneath the stars, beneath the stripes
One more night
Goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
Goodnight America
[Bridge]
Baby, baby, baby, baby
I wish you all the best
Baby, baby
I'll be in the corner with my bulletproof vest, yes
Let's fire up the electric chair
Three cheers for the billionaire
Gunpowder in the desert air
Goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
[Chorus]
One more night
Beneath the stars, beneath the stripes
One more night
Goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
Goodnight America
[Chorus]
One more night
Beneath the stars, beneath the stripes
One more night
Goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
[Outro]
(Woo)
(Woo)
Goodnight America
About
“Goodnight America”, according to frontman Pete Lawrie Winfield, is “pro America, anti creeping nausea, pro choice, anti anything else.” The song gained some traction after it was used on Sacha Baron Cohen’s 2018 political satire series Who Is America?.
The music video contains footage from Donald Trump rallies, police violence, nuclear bomb tests, and more. The song in particular takes aim at Donald Trump, who has been a very controversial presidential candidate for the 2016 Election, and bashes the ideas that he has had such as ‘building a wall to keep the Mexicans out’, as well as him gloating of his wealth.
In an article from Pitchfork, Lawrie stated:
It would have been nice to have seen through my daydream, to have drawn the blinds, battened down the hatches and pretended that the country that I now call home, a country that I love, wasn’t falling victim to some kind of cartoonish nightmare. This song is pro America, anti creeping nausea, pro choice, anti anything else. To dissect it too much, to feel the need to explain it seems unnecessary. We are all privy to the same information now, we are all awake.
