“This Life” was released with “Unbearably White” on April 4th, 2019 as the third and final pair of singles before Father Of The Bride was officially released.

In his Soundcheck Session with Radio X in May 2019, Ezra confirmed that some of the themes of the song, like in many other songs on the record, are interpersonal relationships and adulthood.

The song started from the hook of iLoveMakonnen’s Tonight, which became the chorus of the song.

“I started to think […] what does it mean to be an adult even in a situation when two people have done something wrong? You bite the bullet and say: ok you cheated on me, I cheated on you, but I can only start with myself. […] Actually I have been cheating through my whole life. So maybe I have to examine my whole way of thinking.”
