“We Didn’t Start This Website” is a song released in 2007 that remixes Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and replaces the lyrics with pop culture and references from the culture of the online site “YTMND” (short for “You’re The Man Now Dog”, derived from a quote said by Sean Connery from the film “Finding Forrester”). The song does not follow a year-by-year list like the original, and instead picks random names, events, moments, and references in a random but rhymitic order.
The remix is said to have originated in July 2006 by a group of people on a Vintrilo chat for YTMND, where the idea was to make a compilation of fads using a song to tie them together. After several suggestions, Billy Joel’s song was picked and lyrics were worked on. However, auditions for singing the song ended up causing the team of people around the creation to eventually disband with the exception of NeoMatrixClit, who was the main writer for the song.
On January 18th, 2007, Feedrossie who had previously worked with NeoMatrixClit on a previous YTMND were chatting when Neo brought up the at-the-time failed project when Feedrossie offered to sing the song for them. After a vocal demo that ended up being approved, more lyrics were added and the song became finalized and scheduled to release on YTMND. You can view the original site here.
