Lowkey as Hell Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I just cried into a shirt I could never afford last year
My Drake problems, my fake problems
But it's really how I'm feeling here

I guess at least my work is working, right?
I think people like me better when I'm hurt inside
They say it's not true, and they hope I'm alright
But their eyes probably rolled at the first line (Fuck 'em)

[Pre-Chorus]
I like cool shirts, I like cold rings
I want a big house, but I'm hiding

I think I'm halfway there but my heart feels off so
What's the point of being great if I'm great and alone?

[Chorus]
If you need me now
I'll be there somehow
I'll pick you up, we can ride
I'll fly away like I bought my own airline
I'll take you with me, we can ride

[Verse 2]
I'll probably die in my apartment I couldn't afford last year
(Yeah, come on)
My Drake problems sound thoughtless
But it's all brand new and I promise I'm being really honest

When I'm getting up the guts to say that
I haven't had a day off since my blue hair
And I combat how the pressure feels
I should call my parents more just to say that I'ma be okay
So they don't worry every day
[Pre-Chorus]
I like cool shirts, I like cold rings
I want a big house, but I'm hiding

I want a brain that doesn't hate me
I wanna see my stupid fucking friends daily

[Chorus]
If you need me now
I'll be there somehow
I'll pick you up, we can ride
I'll fly away like I bought my own airline
I'll take you with me, we can ride

[Bridge]
I'm highkey and lowkey as hell
You diva, I just wanna see ya
I'm highkey and lowkey as hell
You sweetheart, don't wanna be apart

[Outro]
I'm highkey and lowkey as hell
You diva, I just wanna see ya
I'm highkey and lowkey as hell
You sweetheart, don't wanna be apart

Awsten Knight leaked this song on September 17, 2020, at the end of an Instagram live stream. He played the leak while cutting the green parts of his own hair off, which fans speculated to be symbolism that marks the end of the FANDOM era. When asked in an interview if it marked the end of the era or the start of the next one, Awsten replied that “It’s kind of both. It feels like we’re kind of in purgatory right now. Being able to just cut all my f*cking hair off… feels like a reset to me, if anything.”

In the days following the leak, Knight continued to make tweets on both his personal Twitter and the official Waterparks twitter which seemed to be teasing the song. On September 20th, the official Waterparks account tweeted that if fans could get zero retweets, Lowkey As Hell would be released that day– a similar challenge to the 20,000 retweets one that led to the release of the demo album in January of the same year.

Unfortunately, it did not take long for the tweet to be retweeted, and only a minute later, a second tweet was made stating that the challenge had been failed and that Lowkey As Hell would not be released that day.

On September 23rd, Awsten tweeted out the song’s upcoming release date, and on September 25th at midnight the song was officially released. In an interview posted on kerrang.com, he states that the reason for the song’s release is that “right now, I just want to give people a song– that’s pretty much where I’m at.”

What did Waterparks say about "Lowkey as Hell"?
Genius Answer

In a September 2019 Kerrang Magazine interveiw, Kight explained:

The song is a recap of the last year or so. It really describes what’s been going on and who I am. When I’m onstage, I’m a forward-facing, extroverted presence. At the same time, I’m also the biggest hermit ever. I just like to stay in, ignore my phone a lot, and write. I’m naturally reserved in my day-to-day life. The juxtaposition of loud materialism versus private emotion in that opening line really encapsulates the feeling I wanted to get across in the rest of the song.”

Is there a live performance of this song?
Genius Answer

Yes! Waterparks' videographer Jawn Rocha filmed the band Playing “Lowkey as Hell” Live during their Anti-Tour livestream concert.

What has the artist said about the song's creation?
Genius Answer

Lyricist Awsten Knight spoke about the song in a [track-by-track breakdown]) of Greatest Hits for NME’s YouTube Channel:

I didn’t intend for “Lowkey As Hell” to be the first single. I didn’t. I think it’s a good song like this shit is beautiful and the vocal patterns are amazing. It was a bittersweet thing, like at the end of March I thought ‘this is the perfect time to take a break from this and not look at the Internet for a bit’. And dude, it was so nice I wasn’t on the Internet for like six months, then when it was time to come back and tell people we made Lowkey I was like “do I have to?” I broke my Internet addiction and it was so crazy. I went from always tweeting and posting too ‘I don’t even want to look at this shit at all.’

I’m always kind of surprised when people connect to things that are so specific, like ‘I just cried into a shirt I could never afford last year’ is not that relatable, I don’t think, but people take lyrics and they interpret them in their own ways. it’s kind of like in the same way that people project their own emotions aren’t you, this is just a way less toxic version of that. [Instead] they read what you’re saying and what you’re going through and they are able mentally to find ways to apply it to themselves.

I write selfishly. I write what I’m feeling. It’s not like ‘I wonder how this is going to help someone‘, that’s not great, but it’s not shitty because there aren’t rules with songwriting and art, but it’s always interesting to see what people find relatable; because whenever I’m making them and I listen back afterwards I’m like ‘this shit is not relatable at all’.
