Violet! Lyrics

[Verse 1]
You freak me out
So I stay in
Do you see me now?
Do you have my PIN?
No, I don’t know how
You’ll show up or when
But it freaks me out
So I stay in

[Pre-Chorus]
You say “Boy I’m not a stalker
But I watch you when you’re walking
You call all kinds of people who aren’t me
You love me in such weird ways
Like when you lead me back to your place
You do it without words
But don’t you worry ‘cause I heard everything."

[Chorus]
Now you’re looking through the peephole
On the door of my apartment
My panic’s at the ceiling
But I'm flat down on the carpet
You say
“Boy, I know you’re in there
And the way you tease is unfair
And this ain’t Misery
But I’d break your knees
To keep you here with me
But I'd break your knees
To keep you here with me
Break your knees
To keep you here with me (yeah)"

[Verse 2]
You freak me out
So I stay in
Alone on my couch
Watching Netflix again
It’s like I’m watching "You"
But it’s about me
And just to be clear
I mean the show, you’re Joe

[Pre-Chorus]
“Boy I’m not a stalker
But I watch you when you’re walking
You call all kinds of people who aren’t me (yeah)
You love me in such weird ways
Like when you lead me back to your place
You do it without words
But don’t you worry 'cause I heard—"

[Chorus]
Now you’re looking through the peephole
On the door of my apartment
My panic’s at the ceiling
But I'm flat down on the carpet
You say
“Boy, I know you’re in there
And the way you tease is unfair
And this ain’t Misery
But I’d break your knees
To keep you here with me
But I'd break your knees
To keep you here with me
Break your knees
To keep you here with me (yeah)"

[Instrumental]

[Chorus]
Looking through the peephole
On the door of my apartment
My panic’s at the ceiling
But I'm flat down on the carpet
She said
“Boy, I know you’re in there
And the way you tease is unfair
And this ain’t Misery
But I’d break your knees
To keep you here with me
Boy I'm not a stalker
But I watch you when you're walking"
("Break your knees
To keep you here with me")
"You call all kinds of people who aren't me"

I'm not leaving any signs
Like the kind you think you find

Why is the song called 'Violet!'?
Genius Answer

There are two possibilities for title selection.

Awsten Knight confirmed in a tweet title derives from The Incredibles' character Violet.

In tandem to Waterparks' tradition to name every EP and album alphabetically, the band handpicks a title form each release that calls back to a movie under the Pixar franchise.

Another possibility may lay in Knight’s synesthesia, a neurological condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway, such as hearing, leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway, such as sight.

This phenomenon allows Knight to visually process colors associated with the sonic melody of a song. In a video published to MTV’s YouTube Channel, Knight explained this was how previous Waterparks songs such as “Peach (Lobotomy),” “Cherry Red,” and “Pink” earned their names.

What did Waterparks say about "Violet!"?
Genius Answer

Lyricist Awsten Knight spoke about the song in a track-by-track breakdown of Greatest Hits for NME’s YouTube Channel:

[Lyrically,] Violet!” is about kind of a stalker situation I had going on. It’s like walking around your neighborhood and feeling watched, and then you get a message online like ‘saw you at blah blah blah’ and your [panicked]. [There we’re also,] a handful of weird confrontations that I’m not looking for at all.

Musically, honestly I had just made a couple real weird ones like snow globe where there is a 40 second piano intro, and I just wanted to make some thing that is really good. The problem is, it’s a fucking Waterparks song, so if it sounds really bright and shiny I’m saying some weird or dark shit, so don’t listen too hard. I just wanted to make a song that sonically felt so good, and those lyrics are just kind of what was going on at that time.

Is there a live performance of this song?
Genius Answer

Yes! Waterparks performed “Violet” in a video for MTV’s YouTube channel.
