The song was originally written for Weezer’s abandoned project, Songs from the Black Hole. It can be interpreted within the context of the album’s storyline, where Jonas realizes he wants to be with Maria after a period of indecisiveness. However, it can also be contextualized within Rivers Cuomo’s life at the time, as he seems to be referring to his relationship with Jennifer Chiba. Much of Maria and Jonas' relationship is inspired by his own with Chiba, and the song suggests some kind of resolution on Rivers' part, thanking her for always being there for him, even if he didn’t put her first.
