An exclusive single for the Weezer Fan Club, “It’s Been So Long” was first hinted at during the recording of 2014’s Everything Will Be Alright In the End, but ultimately not included on that album or the three subsequent albums of all-original material since. Finally in 2019, Rivers Cuomo suggested that the song should be released as a Fan Club single.

In an email sent to the Weezer Fan Club, historian and unofficial fifth member Karl Koch shared some background about the song:
This song somehow never quite made it onto the last few albums, so it became an orphan, despite being fully realized and pretty darn great. Rivers suggested it for the next Fan Club single, but he didn’t elaborate on why exactly.
I think he chose perfectly, as it immediately struck me as perfect for the club, due to its “looking back” vibes – reminiscing on the old days and such. While the lyrics are essentially girl/high school oriented, the tone and vibe felt to me more like a look back on early Weezer days, a longing for the more innocent days (basically the time before “Buddy Holly” exploded), which feels very appropriate today as we look back on the Blue Album 25 years(!) on.
Owners of the physical 7" will note many cool details in the artwork, all inspired directly by memories of touring in the summer of 1994 in our van “Betsy”. The rear cover shows us broken down on the side of the road (which happened more than once that summer), as Scott drives by unaware that he would one day be in the band he was whizzing past. We made sure that Scott’s car was accurate to what he drove in 1994, I got the make and color directly from Scott, who was also on the LA scene in the early 90’s – we just didn’t know him yet.
