“Best Friend” is a heartfelt ballad duet between WENDY and fellow Red Velvet member, SEULGI. Lyrically, the two bandmates express gratitude towards each other and let their “best friend” know how significant they are in their lives.
Speaking on her friendship with SEULGI in a March 2019 interview with Glamour, WENDY said:
I met her since I was a trainee, she’s the same age as me, she’s like my true friend. She takes a huge part of my life. […] I just love everything about her, I just love SEULGI.
The song marks the second collaboration between WENDY and SEULGI, following their January 2017 song, “I Can Only See You,” from the OST of 2016 K-drama, Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth.
