God Turn Me Into a Flower Lyrics

[Verse 1]
As long as I stand, to face the crowd
To know my name, to know its sound

It's good to be soft when they push you down

[Chorus]
Oh, God, turn me into a flower

[Verse 2]
It always takes me, it's such a curse to be so hard
You shatter easily and can't pick up all those shards
It's the curse of losing yourself when the mirror takes you too far

[Chorus]
Oh, God, turn me into a flower

[Verse 3]
You see the reflection and you want it more than the truth
You yearn to be that dream you could never get to
'Cause the person on the other side has always just been you

[Chorus]
Oh, God, turn me into a flower

[Instrumental Outro]

Genius Annotation

“God Turn Me Into a Flower” is the third and final single from Weyes Blood’s fifth studio album, And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow. The track takes root from the Myth of Narcissus who according to Greek Mythology was the son of the river god Cephissus and the nymph Liriope. In the myth, Narcissus was a beautiful youth who fell in love with his reflection and eventually died because he could not leave his image.

The lyrics reflect a similar theme of becoming obsessed with the idealized image reflected in the mirror and losing one’s true self in the process. However, while the myth of Narcissus is often interpreted as a cautionary tale against vanity, the lyrics suggest a more empathetic and self-reflective approach to the same theme. To this, in an interview with NME, Weyes Blood commented;

… At the end of the myth, Narcissus gets turned into a flower, which is symbolic for something that’s just kind of pliable and goes with the flow of the universe. And ultimately, it’s soft. That’s the approach you have to take with all the uncertainty and irrevocable change that’s happening right now. If everything’s gonna fall apart, don’t be weak. Become soft.

The track’s release was first teased on November 14, 2022, via a post on her socials stating;

The album’s out in four days 🌚 Catharsis imminent.
Think I’ll unleash one last song tomorrow at 9:00 pm PT, the final peak into the pages of the romance novel. Thank you, guys, so much for listening.

Genius Answer

In “God Turn Me into a Flower,” I relay the myth of Narcissus, whose obsession with a reflection in a pool leads him to starve and lose all perception outside his infatuation. In a state of great hubris, he doesn’t recognize that the thing he so passionately desired was ultimately just himself. God turns him into a pliable flower who sways with the universe.
