love song Lyrics

[Post-Chorus]
I won't let you down
I won't let you down

[Verse 2]
Standing there, you look at me
Understanding everything
Yeah, it's so fascinating
You patch up the blood and the cuts
But our blood got mixed up
So I guess we belong to each other

[Pre-Chorus]
Sweetheart, you are
Changing my mind
Sweetheart, you are
Changing my mind

[Chorus]
Nobody taught me how to love myself
So how can I love somebody else?
There ain't no excuses
I swear that I'm doing my best

Nobody taught me how to love myself
So how can I love somebody else?
I'm so new to this
I swear that I'm doing my best

Genius Annotation

When on BBC Radio 1 with Jack Saunders, YUNGBLUD said that “love song” talks about his perception of love. He first believed that love was violent and abusive because he watched his parents be abusive to each other while being in love. However, he fell in love for the first time with his ex-girlfriend, Halsey, and started changing his mind about love. Throughout the relationship he realises how love should be and he talks about being scared of loving her wrong due to growing up learning love equaled abuse, he wants to love her right and reciprocate the love she’s giving to him. In Halsey’s previous relationship she was abused and cheated on, YUNGBLUD promises her that although he’s fragile with love, he won’t be the same, he won’t let her down.

Ultimately their relationship mutually ended after 10 months, the pair remain good friends and support each other. He took with him his changed perception of love, an understanding of his sexuality and how he views himself both romantically and sexually. In an interview with Attitude Magazine he stated:

I owe a lot to that girl, in terms of my growth and my sexuality, in terms of everything.

Genius Answer

The first YUNGBLUD love song. I don’t say this very often, but I had a lot of violence in my house growing up. I was always very loved as a kid, but my idea of love—and what it meant to fall in love—got skewed. It was like, ‘If this is love, fuck that shit. I’m going to be all right on my own, thank you very much.’ But then I met someone and I fell in love and I realized I’d never been more wrong in my life. I learned so much—she was incredible and we were incredible together. But I didn’t just want to write a song about falling in love or being heartbroken, because no one can prepare you for the pain of heartbreak. It’s about falling in and out of love—with your arms open.
