2019 Has The Most Female Rappers With Billboard Hot 100 Entries This Decade

Saweetie just became the seventh female MC to crack the Billboard chart this year.

2019 has been a banner year for women in hip-hop, and it’s only half over. Billboard reports that Saweetie’s Hot 100 debut this week with “My Type” marks the seventh female MC to crack the Billboard chart this year. This is the highest number of women rappers with Hot 100 entries this entire decade, as Saweetie joins the likes of Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, City Girls, and more.

The full list is as follows:
- Cardi B (11 entries)
- Nicki Minaj (three entries)
- City Girls (two entries)
- Lizzo (two entries)
- Megan Thee Stallion (two entries)
- Iggy Azalea (one entry)
- Saweetie (one entry)

Billboard notably defines Lizzo as a rapper in this metric. Although her music has elements of rap, she’s previously eschewed genre classification and is often labeled as pop or contemporary R&B.

Still, the total list of charting rappers handily beats last year, when Cardi, City Girls, and Minaj were joined only by Bhad Bhabie and DeJ Loaf. In fact, Billboard reports that it’s the highest number of female rappers on the Hot 100 anytime this decade. Other breakout female hip-hop acts like Rico Nasty and Tierra Whack still haven’t reached the chart despite critically praised music, meaning even more entries could be in store.

“My Type” is a cut off Saweetie’s 2019 EP, ICY, and represents her first time on the Hot 100 chart. Her breakout track, “ICY GRL,” never charted.
