Camila Cabello Compares “Bad Things” To ‘Romeo And Juliet’

“The song is the story of a ‘good’ girl who is in love with a ‘bad’ boy.”

Machine Gun Kelly and Camila Cabello’s “Bad Things” collaboration may sound sexy, but it’s actually a nod to a classic love tragedy.

Camila tells Genius that her song with MGK is a modern take on Shakespeare’s classic tale Romeo & Juliet. She elaborates on the “star-crossed lovers theme” in a verified annotation:

“I felt connected to it right away,” says the 19-year-old singer, “the beauty and contradiction of innocence of the ‘good” girl’ character who has these feelings about the ‘bad’ boy that she just can’t deny.”

While “Bad Things"—which interpolates Fastball’s 1998 rock ballad "Out Of My Head"—may sound intimate, Camila says she and MGK recorded their parts separately. Camila was touring with Fifth Harmony while MGK was amid a solo tour.

The Futuristics-produced track is Camila’s second duet away from Fifth Harmony in the past year. In late 2015, she teamed up with Shawn Mendes for “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”
