Charlie Puth Tries To Preserve His Dignity On New Song “I Don’t Think That I Like Her”

It’s the fifth single off his forthcoming album, ‘Charlie.’

Charlie Puth’s love life isn’t going so great—at least, not according to most of the singles (see: “That’s Hilarious”) off his forthcoming album, CHARLIE. His latest release, “I Don’t Think That I Like Her,” is no exception. Produced by Puth himself and featuring blink-182’s Travis Barker on drums, the song was first teased on the pop singer’s now-deleted TikTok, where it racked up over 4.5 million views in less than 24 hours. When the full version finally arrived today, it quickly floated into the Top 20 on the Genius Top Songs chart.

On “I Don’t Think That I Like Her,” Puth plays the usual dating game. He meets a girl, thinks she’s the one, gets his heart broken, and then to maintain some semblance of dignity, tells himself he didn’t like her all that much, either. It’s a little sad, a little funny, and oh so relatable.

On the first verse, Puth goes into more detail about how the relationships always start—from the meet-cute to when things become more serious.

Get her name and get her number
Find out all of the things that we have in common
Never all the differences, oh, yeah
Meet her parents, meet her brother

On the pre-chorus, he starts to notice that he and his new girl aren’t on the same page.

For me, the stars are alignin’
But for her, it’s bad timin’

Things fall apart on the chorus. Puth gets dumped and his opinion of the woman he pined for just moments ago instantly sours.

I don’t think that I like her anymore
Girls are all the same
All they wanna do is break my heart, my heart (Oh-oh)

Puth tries to find a rebound on the second verse—only to end up back in the exact same situation.

So I hook up on a rebound
And I say that I’m gonna be single for life
But she’s so pretty and nice (Pretty and nice)
So I made just one exception

He tries to maintain his dignity and not be the angry ex on the bridge, but it’s easier said than done.

I’m tryin’ not to be bitter
But damn it, I’ll miss her
‘Cause she’s one of a kind (One of a kind)

CHARLIE is set to arrive on October 7. While you wait for the full album to drop, you can read all the lyrics to “I Don’t Think That I Like Her” on Genius.
