Shortly after revealing the tracklist for his new album, Indigo, Chris Brown released his new Drake collaboration, “No Guidance.” It’s the latest single from Brown’s upcoming album, Indigo, his first since 2017.
Brown previewed the track in May during his 30th birthday party, and it marks the duo’s first time appearing on a song together since 2014.
The song sees both Brown and Drake lusting after a woman, with the latter artists promising her lavish gifts and talking about the other men vying for her attention in the first verse. Drake says:
Pretty lil' thing, you got a bag and now you wildin'
You just took it off the lot, no mileage
Way they hittin' you, the DM lookin' violent
Talkin' why you come around and now they silent
Flew the coop at 17, no guidance
“No Guidance” samples “Before I Die.” a 2018 song by Boston singer and producer Che Ecru. Previously, Drake and Chris Brown have appeared together on Brown’s “Deuces” remix and Nicki Minaj’s “Only.”
As Capital Xtra documented, Drake and Chris Brown have a long and relatively fraught history. Some speculated the tension was related to Rihanna, and the pair allegedly had an altercation at a New York nightclub in 2012, which led to Drake telling GQ in 2013 he didn’t want his name linked to Brown’s.
“I don’t want my name to be synonymous with that guy’s name. I really don’t. I wish we could sit down, just like you and me are right now, and talk it out man-to-man,” he said. “But that’s not going to happen. I’m not confrontational, but if someone challenges, I’m not going to back down.”
Over time, the tensions cooled, ultimately culminating in Drake bringing Brown on stage during one of his shows in October 2018 and praising his one-time rival.
“I think this guy’s one of the most talented human beings on the planet,” Drake said of Brown.
