Bad Bunny recently released his second studio album, YHLQMDLG. His collaboration with Jowell & Randy and Ñengo Flow, titled “Safaera,” includes a sample of Missy Elliott’s “Get Ur Freak On.”
During a beat switch that begins on the third verse of “Safaera,” Bad Bunny’s frequent collaborator Tainy and DJ Orma directly sample the Timbaland-produced “Get Ur Freak On,” which is heavily influenced by bhangra music originating from the Punjab region of India.
“Get Ur Freak On” was released as the lead single from Missy’s third studio album, Miss E… So Addictive. Thanks to its unique, futuristic production, the song reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was eventually certified Platinum and became one of Missy’s signature hits.

Bad Bunny is just the latest artist to sample a 2000s hit from his childhood. As Genius previously noted, musicians like Megan Thee Stallion, Tory Lanez, Saweetie, Normani, and Rico Nasty have all looked toward the early aughts for inspiration.
However, Bad Bunny looked to more than just the 2000s for inspiration on “Safaera.” As Pitchfork points out, the song also samples the bassline from Bob Marley’s “Could You Be Loved,” the hook from Cosculluela’s “Pa’ La Pared,” the Jaws sample from Tócate Tu Misma (Remix)’s “El Tiburón,” among other songs.
“Safaera” is poised to be a hit. As one of the most popular songs from YHLQMDLG, the track sits at 7.5 million YouTube views in less than a week without even having an official music video. Meanwhile, its Genius song page has racked up well over 100,000 total pageviews.
