Big Sean Addresses Relationship Issues & Mental Health On “Single Again”

His ex-girlfriend Jhené Aiko provides background vocals.

Less than two days after the release of his latest freestyle, Big Sean is back with his new song, “Single Again.” The track addresses Sean’s love life, which has been a fixture of media speculation ever since he seemingly split with Jhené Aiko, as well as his struggles with mental health. Although Aiko’s “Triggered Freestyle” painted a darker picture of their break-up, she lays down background vocals on “Single Again.” Sean’s song provides a healthier view on a romantic split.

On the track, he raps about breaking things off in a mature way:

I’m single again (Single again)
Told her we’ll be better off friends (Uh)
Maybe I should just focus on me (On me)
And slow down, don’t rush romance

Earlier this year, Sean opened up about struggling with depression and anxiety. The second verse of “Single Again” finds him reflecting on self-care and finding inner satisfaction:

What have you done for yourself?
What have you done for your mental health? (Yeah, yeah)
I even tried the drugs and they didn’t help
Short term fix, that breaks everything else (Oh, oh)

Ty Dolla $ign also provides some help with background vocals on the second half of the track. Sean also noted that the cover art contains a personal touch:

Sean is expected to drop his long-awaited fifth album soon. He has yet to make an official announcement about the project, but previously told Philadelphia’s Boom 103.9 what to expect from the project:

I definitely got some features that’s in the works. It’s not done yet, but it’s definitely almost time. One of the things I hate is to make music for no reason. It’s definitely a reason. It’s definitely music that inspires. It feels good to know that I have my best music that I’ve done thus far and I’m on the brink of putting it out to the world.
