Billie Eilish Champions Creative Expression On “Come Out & Play”

The track appears in Apple’s 2018 holiday ad campaign.

Billie Eilish has released “come out and play,” a contemplative song about allowing your creativity to shine through despite insecurity. The track, like much of Eilish’s work, is produced by her brother FINNEAS.

The animated video tells the story of Sofia, a bakery employee who works on personal creative projects on a Supreme sticker-clad laptop but is nervous about sharing them publicly. Eventually, her dog spills her box of ideas out the window, where they fall into the hands of the townspeople, who appear quite impressed by them. On the song, Eilish encourages listeners to fill a blank page with ideas, saying:

You see the piece of paper
Could be a little greater
Show me what you could make her
You’ll never know until you try it

She continues to push that message on the song’s hook, singing:

And I know it makes you nervous
But I promise you, it’s worth it
To show ‘em everything you kept inside
Don’t hide, don’t hide

Eilish has tackled issues like anxiety and insecurity on songs like “lovely” with Khalid and “idontwannabeyouanymore.”

FINNEAS tweeted that he was “beyond honored” to be asked to contribute music to the project:

After dropping her debut EP dont smile at me in 2017, Eilish has released a handful of singles this year, including “when the party’s over” and “you should see me in a crown.”

In an interview with Billboard, Eilish said that she and FINNEAS are approaching writing new music based on what will translate to the stage.

“I think the main thing that me and my brother have learned is, what is fun to perform? When the crowd has fun when whatever is playing?” she said. “I love jumping around and going crazy, I love moshing. Just going insane on stage.”

Billie Eilish appeared on Genius' series For The Record to discuss her songwriting process and the music that resonates with her.
