“Had a pretty boy over, but he couldn’t stay/On his way out I made him sign an NDA.”

Billie Eilish is gearing up to release her sophomore album Happier Than Ever at the end of this month, and today she shared the project’s latest single, “NDA,” as well as the song’s music video. On the song, Eilish references having a stalker, how she can barely leave her house, and having romantic partners sign NDAs.

The song’s title references Non-disclosure agreements—a legal contract signed to establish confidentiality between two parties. The song is produced by Eilish’s brother and frequent collaborator FINNEAS.

On the song’s first verse, Eilish describes a harrowing scene with a stalker:

Had to save my money for security
Got a stalker walkin' up and down the street
Says he’s Satan and he’d like to meet

Earlier this year, Eilish was granted a temporary restraining order against an alleged stalker. In her court filing, Eilish claimed 23-year-old John Hearle had been camping nearby her family’s house and trying to look inside their home. She also said Hearle would make a throat-slitting gesture when he saw her.

Later in the verse, she details how difficult it is to date when you’re as famous as she is:

Had a pretty boy over, but he couldn’t stay
On his way out I made him sign an NDA, mm
Yeah, I made him sign an NDA

On the second verse, she refers to how her fame often leaves her trapped in her house and how she longs for a new career:

Thirty under thirty for another year (Another year)
I can barely go outside, I think I hate it here (Think I hate it here)
Maybe I should think about a new career
Somewhere in Kaua'i where I can disappear

While she was still in her late teens, Eilish shot to superstardom after releasing her 2019 debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?. Since then, the 19-year-old singer has become a household name and one of the biggest names in pop music, but as “NDA” clearly illustrates, there are drawbacks to being as famous as she is.

Billie Eilish’s Happier Than Ever drops on July 30. She previously claimed that none of the songs on the album are joyful.
