Genius Presents: The Month In Lyrics (April 2019)

Lil Nas X, PNL, Billie Eilish, Lil Dicky, & BLACKPINK had a strong month.

Every day, millions of music fans come to Genius to find the deeper meaning behind the lyrics of their favorite artists, from rappers to pop singers to country stars. Our Top Songs Chart reflects what the world is listening to all day, every day. In 2019, we’re continuing to crunch numbers and compile the Month in Lyrics to show what music is catching fans' eyes and ears the most.

The data is broken down into the following categories each month: Top Artists, Top Songs, Top Lyrics, and Top Albums.

Top Artists

Billie Eilish spends her second month at No. 1 on Genius' Top Artists chart, thanks to the continued success of her debut album, WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?. Notching a surprisingly robust second place is PNL, the French rap duo whose third album, Deux frères, arrived at the top of April. Lil Nas X’s meme-driven ride to No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart helped him earn a solid performance this month, coming in one slot above the ever-popular Eminem. Taylor Swift finished out the Top 5 thanks to “ME!,” her Brendon Urie collaboration that serves as the lead single for her still-mysterious seventh album.

Other major entries on this month’s Top 10 include Nipsey Hussle, whose catalog saw a robust spike in interest following his murder on March 31, and Lil Dicky, whose star-studded video for “Earth” has racked up millions of streams. Just outside the Top 10 is Lil Uzi Vert, whose album delay woes haven’t stopped the success of songs like “Sanguine Paradise.” Khalid’s new album helped him land at No. 12, while Beyoncé reentered the chart thanks to her Homecoming special on Netflix and accompanying live album.

Victoria Monét made her Top Artists debut this month, too, thanks almost entirely to her Ariana Grande collaboration, “MONOPOLY.” The song peaked at No. 69 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Monét’s first entry as an artist rather than a songwriter. K-Pop groups like BTS and BLACKPINK also posted notable performances on this month’s chart thanks to new albums.

Top Songs

The unstoppable meme of “Old Town Road” helped Lil Nas X reach No. 1 on Genius' Top Songs chart this month, a first for both him and country star Billy Ray Cyrus. The genre-bending song grabbed its fair share of headlines last month, culminating in a four-week run at No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart. Lil Dicky’s cameo-filled “Earth” came in second, with artists like Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, and Leonardo DiCaprio making appearances. Big new releases from Taylor Swift (with Panic! at the Disco’s Brendon Urie) and Ariana Grande (with longtime collaborator Victoria Monét) also cracked the Top 5, with Billie Eilish’s “bad guy” dropping just two spots from last month to land at No. 5.

K-pop girl group BLACKPINK continued to post impressive numbers, as did YouTube star PewDiePie, whose “Congratulations” landed at No. 6 this month. Fans continue to gobble up new Lil Uzi Vert music as they await the long-delayed arrival of his sophomore album, Eternal Atake.

On the lower end of the chart, Florence + The Machine’s Game of Thrones track, “Jenny of Oldstones,” drew a huge number of pageviews, with fans of the HBO series looking for hints about the fates of their favorite characters. Avicii’s first posthumous track, “SOS,” came in at No. 14, while meme-driven hit “U Was At the Club (Bottoms Up)” by The Boyboy West Coast rounded out the Top 20 after finally getting an official release.

Top Albums

Teen sensation Billie Eilish continued to dominate the competition this month with her debut album, although French rap duo PNL weren’t far behind. In fact, for the first time ever, the majority of the Top 5 slots on Genius' Top Albums chart are from non-English-speaking acts thanks to PNL and K-pop groups BLACKPINK and BTS.

The highest debut placement for an English-language album came with Khalid’s Free Spirit, which landed at No. 6 this month. New rap albums from Kevin Abstract and ScHoolboy Q also cracked the Top 10.

Two old albums surged on the chart this month, too. Nipsey Hussle’s Victory Lap landed at No. 11 after a wave of curiosity about his music following his death in late March. Beyoncé’s Lemonade also rebounded thanks to the album landing on all streaming services for the first time, as well as her Netflix special Homecoming.

Much of the rest of the chart was made up of ever-popular holdovers. City Girls landed at No. 19 with November 2018’s Girl Code thanks to the continued popularity of the Lil Yachty-penned “Act Up,” while interest in YNW Melly’s legal situation is driving the popularity of his early 2019 release, I AM YOU.

Top Lyrics

Last month, Billie Eilish took seven of the ten slots on the Top Lyrics chart. This month, it’s down to six. Her sample of The Office on “my strange addiction” remains a fan favorite, as does the dark message of “listen before i go.”

Taylor Swift landed at No. 2 with lyrics from the chorus of “ME!,” her first single since 2017. Assisted by Brendon Urie of Panic! At the Disco, the song has (so far) peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100 chart, too. Meanwhile, Ariana Grande and Victoria Monét’s playful ode to bisexuality on “MONOPOLY” drew outsized fan interest, as did Lil Dicky’s reference to the Holocaust on “Earth.”
