Each day, millions of music fans come to Genius to read lyrics and learn about their favorite artists, and our Top Songs Chart reflects what the world is listening to all day, every day. In 2016, Genius song pages were viewed over 1 billion times. In 2017, we’ll be crunching numbers and compiling the Month In Lyrics on the first of every month.
The data is broken down into the following categories each month: Top Artists, Top Songs, Top Lyrics, and Top Albums.
Migos‘ latest album, Culture, just dropped but the Atlanta trap trio dominated the month thanks to their smash hit “Bad And Boujee” and the release of “T-Shirt.” Lin-Manuel Miranda and Hamilton are still in the headlines, thanks in part to the release of the demo tape behind the musical’s greatest hits and a nation-wide tour coming soon. Meanwhile, The Weeknd’s Starboy is still getting a fair amount of traction in the music world before he heads out on the road. And Drake is just gearing up for the release of More Life with hits like “Fake Love” still climbing the charts.
It’s no surprise that the No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 has been the No. 1 song on the Genius Top Songs Chart for a few weeks now; Migos' “Bad and Boujee” doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere fast. Ed Sheeran’s new songs—specifically “Shape Of You"—have spent a good portion of the month bouncing around the top five songs on Genius, while Rae Sremmurd and Aminé are continuing their success well into the new year.
The chorus to Migos latest single “T-Shirt” references a 2005 lyric by late Atlanta rap icon Shawty Lo, from D4L’s underground hit “I’m Da Man"—and is the top lyric on Genius this month. Lyrics from their smash hit “Bad And Boujee” make an appearance within the top lyrics in January, too.

The top Albums—which counts any collection of at least five songs, including EPs—looks at the highest average views of all songs in the collection. It’s no surprise that Migos, who have snagged January’s Top Artist, Top Song, and Top Lyric, also come in first for Top Album with Culture. J. Cole and The Weeknd’s fourth quarter 2016 releases are still going strong, while Tory Lanez’s New Years Day release Chixtape 4 is creeping up in the top five albums of the month. French rapper/producer Nekfeu’s December album Cyborg closes out the Top 10.
