Each day, millions of music fans come to Genius to read lyrics and learn about their favorite artists—our Top Songs Chart reflects what the world is listening to all day, every day. In 2016, Genius song pages were viewed over one billion times. In 2017, we’re crunching numbers and compiling the Month In Lyrics on the first of every month.
The data is broken down into the following categories each month: Top Artists, Top Songs, Top Lyrics, and Top Albums.
After ruling the Top Artists category for the past two months, XXXTentacion was finally knocked out of the top spot by a resurgent Post Malone. Not only did Malone’s “rockstar” make a huge and immediate splash, but his 2016 album Stoney saw dramatically increased popularity, too. Sam Smith also climbed up the charts thanks to a string of new singles, and Lin-Manuel Miranda moved up a few notches in the wake of his Puerto Rico benefit song “Almost Like Praying.” Finally, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie debuted at No. 12 this month thanks to strong interest in his album The Bigger Artist.
Sam Smith moved up from his September slot to claim the most popular song on Genius this month with “Too Good At Goodbyes,” which earned over one million pageviews in October. Hot on its heels was Post Malone’s “rockstar” and last month’s winner, Logic’s “1-800-273-8255.” Lil Pump managed to score a Top 10 slot with “Gucci Gang,” as did Migos with their Nicki Minaj and Cardi B-assisted “Motor Sport.” Nearly a year after dropping, Malone’s “I Fall Apart” has been experiencing a resurgence of popularity that landed it at No. 16 this month.
Riding his viral success to No. 1 this month is Big Shaq, whose ad-lib gun sounds were the most popular lyric on Genius in October. Much of the rest of the Top 10 was holdovers from September, although Eminem earned a spot with his Donald-Trump eviscerating BET Hip-Hop Awards cypher “The Storm.” Somehow, the repeated chorus of Lil Pump’s “Gucci Gang” also earned a Top 10 berth. A$AP Ferg’s bubbling hit “Plain Jane” rounds out the Top 10.
Post Malone feat. 21 Savage, “rockstar”
Man, I feel just like a rockstar (star, ayy, ayy)
Logic, “1-800-273-8255”
I been taking my time
I feel like I’m out of my mind
It feel like my life ain’t mine
Who can relate?
Cardi B, “Bodak Yellow”
Sam Smith, “Too Good At Goodbyes”
Even though you mean the most to me
‘Cause every time I open up, it hurts
So I’m never gonna get too close to you
Even when I mean the most to you
In case you go and leave me in the dirt
XXXTentacion, “Jocelyn Flores”
I’ve been trippin' ‘bout some things, can’t change
Suicidal, same time I’m tame
Picture this, in bed, get a phone call
Girl that you fucked with killed herself
Eminem, “The Storm”
I forgot… oh yeah
That’s an awfully hot coffee pot
Should I drop it on Donald Trump? Probably not
But that’s all I got ‘til I come up with a solid plot
Camila Cabello feat. Young Thug, “Havana”
Half of my heart is in Havana, ooh-na-na (ayy, ayy)
He took me back to East Atlanta, na-na-na
All but my heart is in Havana (ayy)
Lil Pump, “Gucci Gang”
Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang (Gucci gang)
For the third month in a row, XXXTENTACION has taken the top spot on Genius' Top Albums chart with 17, earning 75,673 average pageviews. Lil Pump and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie earned the highest new spots this month with their respective debut albums, while former One Direction singer Niall Horan came in at No. 13 with Flicker. Despite dropping on October 20, Young Thug and Future’s collaborative album Super Slimey also snuck into the Top 20 at No. 17. The rest of the chart was made up of holdovers, most notably Post Malone’s Stoney, which returned to the Top 20 nearly a year after its release.
