She wrote the song just four days before her near-fatal overdose.

After nearly two years away from the stage, Demi Lovato returned on Sunday night with an emotional performance of her new song, “Anyone.” She wrote the song just four days before her near-fatal 2018 overdose, and vowed it would be the first song she performed when she made her return.

On the track, she sings about struggling with alcohol:

Confided into alcohol
I tried and tried and tried some more
Told secrets ’til my voice was sore
Tired of empty conversation
’Cause no one hears me anymore

In a recent interview with Zane Lowe, Lovato explained the headspace she was in when she wrote the song:

I almost listen back and hear these lyrics as a cry for help. [And] you kind of think, ‘How did nobody listen to this song and think, ‘Let’s help this girl’. [Back then,] I was recording [the song] in a state of mind where I felt like I was OK—but clearly I wasn’t. I even listen back to it and I’m like, 'Gosh, I wish I could go back in time to help that version of myself.’
