Drake Interpolates Aaliyah & Addresses His Status With Cash Money On “Is There More”

“Soon as this album drop I’m out of the deal.”

Drake has a long history of admiration for the late Aaliyah, and he further expresses his fandom on his new Scorpion track “Is There More.” The song includes an interpolation of Aaliyah’s “More Than A Woman,” a cut off her self-titled 2001 album. Timbaland co-wrote the track alongside Static Major, who also has a feature on Scorpion’s “After Dark” with Ty Dolla $ign.

The outro on “Is There More” is sung by Nai Palm, the lead vocalist of Australian band Hiatus Kaiyote. Drake previously sampled Nai Palm on More Life. After the rapper played Hiatus Kaiyote’s “Building a Ladder” to open every show on his 2017 Boy Meets World tour, he eventually decided to add the vocals to More Life’s intro “Free Smoke.”

On the outro of “Is There More,” Nai Palm sings a rendition of the first verse on “More Than A Woman”:

Passion, instant
Sweat beads, feel me (feel me)
Cupid’s shot me
My heartbeat’s racing (my heartbeat’s racing)
Tempt me, drive me (tempt me)
Feels so exciting

This Wallis Lane-produced track isn’t the Drake’s first homage to the late R&B icon. He references Aaliyah on his early hits “Bed Rock” and “We’ll Be Fine,” samples her vocals on “Unforgettable,” and even got a tattoo of her face back in 2012.

On the second verse of “Is There More,” Drake also addresses the possible end of his deal with Cash Money Records, rapping:

It’s too bad reality checks don’t cover the balances due
Whenever it’s time to recoup
Yeah, soon as this album drop I’m out of the deal
In the house playin' D'Angelo, “How Does It Feel?”

The lyrics imply that Scorpion fulfills the contracted requirements of Drake’s label deal with Cash Money, which he has been signed to since 2009. The label has gone through significant turmoil over the past few years, with Birdman and Lil Wayne recently settling a multi-million dollar lawsuit over unpaid royalties. Drake and Nicki Minaj have often been caught in the crossfire between their mentors. Hot 97’s Ebro Darden previously claimed that More Life would satisfy Drake’s contractual obligation with Cash Money, but Scorpion was also released through the label. Looks like we’ll have to wait and see what business moves Drake makes next.
