“I’ve never heard harmonies like that before.”

Emeli Sandé’s second single off her latest album, Long Live the Angels, is inspired by the Scottish singer’s recent trip to Zambia in southern Africa. “Garden,” which features Jay Electronica and British poet Áine Zion, is all about the new connections she developed while she was there.

“I went on a bit of a pilgrimage when I went to Zambia, where my dad is from, and I felt like I really connected with myself,” she tells Genius, explaining how much she enjoyed Zambian music. “I’ve never heard harmonies like that before. Not gospel choirs. Not church choirs. Not anything. These harmonies were so intricate.”
