Eminem Says Lil Wayne’s “Mona Lisa” Has One Of The “Top 5 Verses Of All Time”

“It’s definitely an art to this sh*t and, man, you got it mastered.”

Eminem stopped by Lil Wayne’s Young Money Radio on Friday to reflect on the current state of his career and their history together. During their conversation, Em revealed his fandom of Wayne’s 2018 release, “Mona Lisa,” with Kendrick Lamar, calling it one of the Top 5 rap verses of all time (although it’s technically two verses).

“These last couple albums, man, you been f*cking murdering sh*t,” he said. “I was going to say too, man, I never got a chance to tell you but, ‘Mona Lisa,’ your two verses on that sh*t has got to be one of the top five verses of all time. Yo, and the way that I love when rappers are able to tell a story. And don’t have to, don’t compromise any of the punchlines… And it’s great to see you, me still doing it, you know what I’m saying? It’s definitely an art to this sh*t and, man, you got it mastered.”

“Mona Lisa” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in October 2018. It’s a storytelling track that finds Wayne rapping about a seductive woman who sets men up to be robbed:

N*gga, turn around, I ain’t here to f*ck around
I ain’t here to f*ck around, caught you wit' your pants down
You know what it is, put your f*ckin' hands up
Liz, that’s enough, you can put your hands down
And then he looked dead at her and he shook his head at her
She a good actress and you a dead actor
You’ll be dead after we get what we’re after
If Liz call you daddy, she about to be a bastard, oh

The song was originally recorded in 2014, but held for four years as Wayne became embroiled in a lawsuit with his former record label Cash Money.

Although Eminem didn’t appear on Tha Carter V, he’s previously collaborated with Lil Wayne on songs like “Forever,” “No Love,” and “Drop the World.” Back in February, Wayne told the Drink Champs podcast that he developed a healthy sense of competition with Eminem.

“When you get on [an Eminem] joint, it’s like a championship game,“ he said. "And [then] you win it, and they ask you, ‘How do you feel?’ I came in with my game plan, and I expected my game plan to work. When you send a song to Em…yeah, I tried to attack it like that, like, ‘Nah, you’re not gonna do me [like] this. So I’ma put it all out there [too]. Either we gon’ be right here with it, and we’re going to make a beautiful great song, but you ain’t gon’ do me that.’ Nobody ever said [anybody bodied each other]; I just made sure that he didn’t body me, ’cause that boy is a monster.”

He even shouted Em out on 2020’s “Piano Trap,” rapping:

I’m workin’ my plans, ingenuous
I’m talkin’ ’bout mags and millions
Mags and millions, man, ask Eminem

Clearly the two rappers have a lot of respect for one another.
