It’s based on Malcolm Gladwell’s book, ‘Outliers.’

10 Summers signee and DJ Mustard protégé Ella Mai’s hit song “10,000 Hours,” off of her 2016 EP Change, is all about mastering love. The London-born songstress was inspired by Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers, which claims that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to truly master a craft.

“We’re in that stage where you’re looking for someone to stay with forever, but you’re still like ‘Wait, I’m kind of young. I don’t want to stick to it,’” she tells Genius. “So you kind of get that confusion, but you still want someone there all the time. So, that’s kind of how it came about.”

Ella sat down with Genius for the latest episode of Verified, breaking down her latest song. Watch her go line-for-line on “10,000 Hours” in the video above, and then check out past episodes below.
