Ellie Goulding Recruits Juice WRLD For Her New Single “Hate Me”

“I realized that I can always try and wear these rose-tinted glasses when it comes to my own past relationships.”

Pop star Ellie Goulding is back today with an unconventional guest: Chicago rapper Juice WRLD. The two artists team up on Goulding’s new single, “Hate Me,” featuring production by The Monsters & Strangerz and Jason Evigan.

On the track, Goulding sings about an ex that’s not over her:

I bet you don’t kiss her with your eyes closed
I bet you’re still walkin' on a tightrope
Miss me so much, you’ve been goin' psycho
You ain’t gotta say it, baby, I know

Meanwhile, Juice WRLD recalls some unkind evaluations of him:

Hate me, hate me, tell me how you hate me
Tell me how I’m trash and you could easily replace me
Tell me that I’m strung out, wasted on the daily
Prolly ‘cause there’s no one around me numbin’ all my pain

In an interview with Zane Lowe transcribed by Genius user AndyBelt, Goulding explained the motivation behind the song and how she linked up with Juice WRLD:

I realized that I can always try and wear these rose-tinted glasses when it comes to my own past relationships or my friends’ relationships… The truth of the matter is that humans are crazy and do fucked up things to people, and that’s the truth. Sometimes I think you need to hear that. You need to hear it to sort of validate your own situation, and it happens a lot. I played it to Juice WRLD, he loved it and wanted to be involved.

This is the latest pop collaboration for Juice WRLD, following 2019 tracks with BTS and Halsey. The rapper’s sophomore album, Death Race For Love, debuted at No. 1 back in March.
