The 43-year-old song earned more than 8.47 million streams last week.

Fleetwood Mac has been a cultural touchstone for multiple generations, and now the legendary soft rock band is once again making waves with its classic hit, “Dreams.” The 1977 song was recently featured in a viral video of a man who goes by 420doggface208 (real name Nathan Apodaca), who filmed himself skateboarding and drinking cran-raspberry juice soundtracked by “Dreams.”

The clip has been viewed over 29 million views on TikTok and millions more on Twitter:

Fleetwood Mac founder Mick Fleetwood even recreated the video on his own TikTok account:

All the attention has driven fans to Genius to look up the lyrics. “Dreams” averaged 667 daily pageviews in August, but saw its daily total shoot up to nearly 6,400 on September 26 as the video took off on social media. It hit an even higher daily peak of more than 7,100 on October 5, with renewed media on the song and the cosign from Mick Fleetwood.

Billboard reports that “Dreams” just experienced its biggest streaming week ever, with 8.47 million on-demand audio streams. It sits at No. 36 on the all-genre streaming chart, competing against smash hits released in just the last few weeks. It’s possible that “Dreams” could even re-enter the Billboard Hot 100 next week, more than 40 years after its original release.

Interest in lyrics is natural for any viral video, but “Dreams” in particular has something of a mythical status for fans. Written by Stevie Nicks while breaking up with bandmate Lindsey Buckingham and other bandmates were also going through divorces, the track became a worldwide smash while telling the story of collapsing relationships in the public eye.

On the track, Nicks sings:

Now here you go again, you say you want your freedom
Well, who am I to keep you down?
It’s only right that you should play the way you feel it
But listen carefully to the sound of your loneliness
Like a heartbeat drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering what you had
And what you lost and what you had and what you lost

Along with songs like “Go Your Own Way,” “Don’t Stop,” and “The Chain,” it helped the band’s Rumours become one of the best-selling albums of all time and earned Fleetwood its only No. 1 hit in the US. Rumours has sold over 40 million copies worldwide.

It’s not the first time “Dreams” has seen a viral video-fueled resurgence. The track jumped back onto Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs chart in 2018 following a video of Alcorn State University’s dance squad. The renewed 2020 interest, however, far outpaces even that major boost.
