TM88 ended up sending the beat to Future after missing Nicki’s deadline.

Hip-hop is filled with examples of beats meant for one artist taking off in the hands of another, and that includes one of Future’s fan-favorite tracks. The beat for “Codeine Crazy,” which appears on his 2014 mixtape, Monster, was originally meant for Nicki Minaj’s third album, The Pinkprint, according to producer TM88.

“I really made the beat for Nicki,” TM88 told HotNewHipHop in a 2017 interview. “She was working on her album and I wanted to give her some beats so bad, and I ended up not getting them to her. Future called, I think it was the next day or next two days, and he was like, ‘Bro, I need some beats. I’m going in. I need you.’ I was like, ‘fuck it,’ and I sent the whole pack to him. Ended up getting a lot of stuff that’s on Monster, and ‘Codeine Crazy’ is one of them.”

Alongside “Fuck Up Some Commas,” Future’s “Codeine Crazy” is one of the most popular tracks on his Monster mixtape. Future made the entire project available on streaming services back in October to commemorate its fifth anniversary, with “Codeine Crazy” included.

TM88 worked extensively on Monster, contributing beats to “After That,” “Fetti,” “Showed Up,” and more. However, he may have missed his opportunity with Nicki, as he still doesn’t have a production credit on one of her solo songs.
