Kaytranada Channels Eddie Murphy’s Classic Film ‘Coming to America’ In His “You’re the One” Video

Kaytranada plays the prince’s assistant in this colorful new video.

Fresh off winning the 2016 Polaris Music Prize for his debut album 99.9%, KAYTRANADA debuted the late ‘80s/early '90s-inspired music video for “You’re the One” featuring Syd tha Kyd.

Directed by Shomi Patwary, the video borrows its plot from Eddie Murphy’s 1988 comedy Coming to America, in which he plays an African prince who comes to New York City to find love. Kaytranada plays the “prince’s assistant,” helping him find the girl of his dreams.

The decades get a little muddled—Murphy’s movie came out in the ‘80s, a Super Nintendo system from the early '90s sits on the table, and the girl in the video appears to be talking on a Motorola RAZR cellphone from the early aughts. Whatever decade this takes place in, it’s clear they’re having a very good time.
