Kehlani’s sophomore studio album, It Was Good Until It Wasn’t, drops on Friday, May 8. In an Apple Music interview promoting the project, the R&B singer explained how a conversation with Drake inspired the title.
After wrapping up the album in Canada with Drake’s frequent collaborator Boi-1da, Kehlani stopped by Drake’s house, where she and Toronto native had a “life conversation” and discussed their upcoming projects.
“I was just talking about personal life and I was just like, ‘Man, yeah, it was good until it wasn’t,’” she remembered. “And he was like, ‘Say that sh*t again.‘ He was like, ‘That’s your album.’ And I was like, ‘You might be f*cking right,’ because that just summed up everything when I try to have this really long-winded explanation to you about the project. Shout out to that guy for catching that one ’cause that would’ve been just something that I said.”
Throughout her career, Kehlani has been open about her personal life in her music. Following a recent breakup with rapper YG, she released a song titled “Valentine’s Day (Shameful)” that seemingly addressed their breakup. Subsequent singles like “Toxic,” “F&MU,” and “Everybody Business” covered similar topics.
She recently appeared on Genius' series Verified to break down the latter track:
