Here’s Everything We Know About The 1975's New Album ‘Notes On A Conditional Form’

The group’s fourth album is set to drop in May.

UK pop rock band The 1975 is readying its first album since 2018’s A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships for release later this year, and fan anticipation continues to grow. Notes On A Conditional Form will be the group’s fourth album. After first being scheduled for February 2020, the album was pushed back last year to its new April release date.

To help fans keep track of the latest updates on the project, Genius rounded up everything we know about The 1975’s Notes On A Conditional Form:

The Release Date

Although Notes On A Conditional Form was initially going to drop on February 21, 2020, it will now be released on Friday, April 24.

“It takes like three months or something to physically make a record on vinyl so it comes out on the 24th of April, I think,” frontman Matty Healy said in a January 2020 Instagram Live broadcast. “Sorry if that’s annoying or whatever… For the sake of a couple of months, in the grand scheme of things [the delay] doesn’t really make any difference.”

On March 30, Healy issued an update announcing the album will now arrive on May 22.

The Album Art

At the same time Healy announced the first album delay, he revealed its artwork:

However, that too was updated once again along with the delay to May:

The Recording Process

Notes On A Conditional Form started coming together at the same time as the group’s last album, A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships. The group discussed the project in a 2018 Guardian interview, saying they drew inspiration from “emotional shit [that] happens at night.” They offered a similar explanation to The New York Times, with Healy describing the sound as “in cars smoking weed, Burial and McDonalds and the M62 and Manchester—just England!”

Healy shared the full tracklist on March 30:

The group has already released five of its 22 tracks. They began the album rollout in July 2019, with the climate-focused single, “The 1975.” The track does not feature Matty Healy’s voice at all. Instead, it takes its content from Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg’s speech “Our House is On Fire”:

The group followed that up last August with “People.” Healy told NME the song is inspired by a restrictive abortion bill proposed in Alabama:

October 2019 saw the release of the album’s third single, “Frail State of Mind”:

On January 16, they dropped “Me and You Together Song,” a track about unrequited love:

The song drew attention for lyrics that addressed Healy’s sexuality. Genius contributor hamperedoutkast broke it down:

On February 15, the group played an unreleased song titled “If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know),” on tour in the UK:

On February 19, the band released “The Birthday Party”:

On April 3, The 1975 dropped “Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America” featuring emo folk singer Phoebe Bridgers:

Notes On A Conditional Form is also expected to include an old song written by Healy’s father:
