He channels classics like ‘Star Trek’ & ‘Battlestar Galactica.’

After a breakout 2018 that saw him reach the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the first time with “SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK,” Joji is back today with the video for his new single, “Sanctuary.” Produced by WhosThatInTheTree, the song delivers more of the love-lorn ballad vibes that fans have come to expect from the 88rising singer. Its video pays homage to sci-fi classics like Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica.

The video is envisioned by Joji and directed by Eoin Glaister, a UK-based director who has previously worked with Glass Animals, Danny Brown, and Carnage.

On the track, Joji sings about seeking sanctuary in a relationship:

If you’ve been waiting for fallin' in love
Babe, you don’t have to wait on me
‘Cause I’ve been aiming for Heaven above
But an angel ain’t what I need

Although he has yet to announce another project, a press release states that “Sanctuary” is “somewhat of a taste before the madness,” which may hint at more music to come.

Joji previously sat down with Genius to break down “SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK”:
