British singer/songwriter James Arthur won the X Factor UK back in 2012 and promptly released his self-titled debut album the next year. Although he found early success in his career—his debut hit No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart—Arthur thinks many people wrote him off shortly thereafter. Three years later, he released “Say You Won’t Let Go,” the first single off of his second studio album Back from the Edge, which peaked at No. 1 in several countries, including the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.
“Whenever I’ve fallen in love with somebody, or found somebody, it’s been when I’ve been in a dark place, mentally,” he tells Genius about the song. “That person came and shined a light on me—made me feel like I’m good. Maybe the club isn’t always the best place to find love, but sometimes that happens. It’s happened for me.”
