“It’s a pledge to not be one of those people who lives in the past.”

OneRepublic premiered the lyrics to the second single off of their upcoming fourth studio ahead of its release on Genius. “Kids,” is the follow-up to their hit single “Wherever I Go” and is the true story of lead singer Ryan Tedder’s “disaster of a friend” and him growing up.

Tedder co-produced the song with Brent Kutzle and on it, he sings about celebrating youth but encouraging people to avoid living in the past:

I refuse to look back thinking days were better
Just because they’re younger days
I don’t know what’s ‘round the corner
Way I feel right now I swear we’ll never change

In an annotation on Genius, Tedder explains the inspiration behind the new track:

The official audio will be released on Aug. 12 but for now, read all the annotated lyrics to OneRepublic’s “Kids” on Genius.
