Logic’s “Baby” Flips Biz Markie’s Classic Hit “Just A Friend”

The Maryland rapper’s ‘Supermarket’ album also features an interpolation of A Tribe Called Quest.

Logic’s new novel soundtrack, Supermarket, dropped earlier this week, featuring multiple samples and interpolations of classic hip-hop tracks. One such song is “Baby,” produced by Logic and his frequent collaborator 6ix. On the track, Logic interpolates “Just A Friend,” the 1989 hit by New York rapper Biz Markie.

On the track, Logic slightly alters Biz Markie’s original chorus, rapping:

And you, you got what I need
She says she only wants a friend
Says she only needs a friend
Oh baby, I, I got what you need
No, I can’t just be a friend
No, I’ll never be a friend

Of course, Biz Markie’s track also borrows its melody from “(You) Got What I Need,” a 1968 track by singer Freddie Scott. “Just A Friend” dropped in 1989, and reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart early the next year. It’s the rapper’s only charting hit, but remains a hip-hp staple three decades later.

“Baby” isn’t the only classic rap flip on Supermarket, either. Logic’s “Can I Kick It” interpolates A Tribe Called Quest’s 1990 hit of the same name, although Genius recently reported that the estate of rocker Lou Reed is the only party that stands to financially benefit because it owns 100 percent of Tribe’s publishing on the song.

Supermarket is the official soundtrack for Logic’s debut novel of the same name, and serves as the rapper’s fifth album. He recently announced that his next project, titled Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and dropped its self-reflective title track.
