It’s the second single off his upcoming album, ‘Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent.’

Lewis Capaldi is back at what he does best: eliciting tears with his heart-wrenching ballads. Today, he dropped his latest release, “Pointless,” the second single off his forthcoming album Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent, and the song has already conjured enough tears to climb into the Top 20 on the Genius Top Songs chart.

Produced by Steve Mac, “Pointless” was co-written by another U.K. artist with a knack for gut-wrenching ballads: Ed Sheeran. Capaldi, Johnny McDaid, and Mac also share writing credit. Capaldi told Zane Lowe that working with Sheeran could have had a totally different result. “He could have actively helped me write a dud knowing that it’s going to end my fucking career,” he joked. “But he’s a lovely chap. I do love him.”

Lyrically, “Pointless” is about life being purposeless without having the one you love by your side. On the first verse, Capaldi details just how much positivity his girl adds to his life, as well as what he brings to hers—though it doesn’t exactly seem like a fair trade-off.

I bring her coffee in the mornin'
She brings me inner peace
I take her out to fancy restaurants
She takes the sadness out of me

They have a deep understanding of each other on the pre-chorus.

I know what she’s lost
And she knows when I feel alone

Capaldi doesn’t want to lose that rare connection on the hook. Life would be meaningless without it.

From all my airs and graces
To the little things I do
Everything is pointless without you

On the second verse, Capaldi places his girl at the top of his list of priorities and vows to stand by her side for the rest of his life.

She is the start of everything
And I’ll be there ’til the end

Sheeran isn’t the only A-list collaborator on Broken By Desire, which is set to arrive in May 2023. Capaldi also revealed that he teamed up with The 1975’s Matty Healy for a track. “I love 1975,” Capaldi told Lowe. “I think [they’re] my favorite band just now. I just love how [Healy] is and how they are as a band in terms of the way he is now, especially, he doesn’t give a fuck.”
