Gunna and Lil Baby’s collaborative project Drip Harder has been out for a few days now, and it’s starting to become clear which songs fans are gravitating towards. Aside from lead single “Drip Too Hard,” the most popular song from the project on Genius is “Close Friends.” The track, which has earned over 250,000 Genius pageviews so far, is one of two on Drip Harder that doesn’t feature Gunna. Instead, the Turbo-produced song finds Lil Baby reflecting on the rise and fall of a relationship that seems to mirror his own journey with his girlfriend Amour Jayda (a.k.a. Jayda Cheaves).
Jayda is a social media influencer and hair extension entrepreneur whom Lil Baby has been publicly dating since at least last year. Back in April, Lil Baby seemingly admitted to cheating on her, and “Close Friends” finds Baby addresses infidelity:
I’ll go nuts for you, go cuckoo, lose my cool and all
And I know that shit was wrong, I shouldn’t’ve did what I did
Just wipe your eyes and stop this cryin'
I told the truth, that I’d been lyin'

The second verse features lyrics that mirror comments Jayda made about their relationship earlier this year:
He closes things out with an extravagant promise to her:

Bought a brand new Audemars, but I done ran out of time
Lil Baby later released the song’s music video, co-starring Jayda:
Despite the presence of Drake on Lil Baby and Gunna’s new album, it seems that “Close Friends” may actually be poised to be the breakout hit. The song has averaged over 50,000 Genius pageviews per day since its release, far outpacing their Drake collaboration “Never Recover.” It’s likely that this interest is fueled in part by the personal nature of the “Close Friends” lyrics, which stand somewhat in contrast to the more braggadocious bars elsewhere on the project.
Still, Lil Baby may have flipped his relationship drama into a burgeoning hit. Considering Jayda is now pregnant with his child, the whole story appears to have a happy ending.
