Lil Wayne & Eminem Reveal How They Use Google While Writing Rhymes

“I literally have to Google my lyrics to make sure I didn’t say certain stuff before.”

Lil Wayne and Eminem have each been rapping for over two decades, making it difficult for them not to repeat themselves. During Em’s Friday appearance on Wayne’s Young Money Radio, the MCs bonded over their shared use of Google while writing rhymes.

After Em spoke about getting to the point in his career where he’s rapped about everything and “rhymed every word there is to rhyme,” Wayne revealed how often he Googles his own lyrics.

“If you go through my phone history, my Google history and you press L, first thing that will come up is Lil Wayne lyrics,” the New Orleans rapper said. “I literally have to Google my lyrics to make sure I didn’t say certain stuff before.”

Em admitted to Googling his own lyrics the night before their sitdown, something he’s done for the past half-decade. “Yo, I swear to god I do that too,” he said. “That’s funny as hell because I’ve been doing that for like the past five years, man. You be like, ‘I knew I flipped this.’”

The legendary rappers proceeded to discuss how they’ve evolved over the years. “It’s crazy because when you’re really into the craft, it’s like you’ve got to come up with a new pocket, you’ve got to come up with new cadences,” Em explained. “You can’t do the same flows all the time.”

Wayne agreed, adding that he adapts to flows and melodies used by young rappers as a challenge:

The new music, that’s what make it a bit easier, the melodies. Because a lot of the melodies that they use and the flows that they use are flows and melodies that I’ve never used. So that right there, that kind of make that, when I say I’m going to do, I get a song and I say, ‘I’m about to do one of they flows or one of those type of melodies.’ That make it interesting and kind of fun for me. Like, ‘Let me try this.’ And that’s dope, but I go right back [to spitting] right after four bars.

Em, on the other hand, has been vocal with his negative opinion about certain members of the new generation. On 2018’s Kamikaze, the Detroit rhymer takes numerous shots at rappers like Migos, Lil Yachty, Lil Xan, and Lil Pump. He even accused the latter two artists of copying Wayne on “The Ringer.”

Regardless of how differently they feel about today’s rap music, neither MC is planning to retire anytime soon. They both dropped albums in January, with Em releasing Music to Be Murdered By two weeks before Wayne’s Funeral.
