Makonnen Breaks Down The Lyrics For His Posthumous Lil Peep Collaboration “Sunlight On Your Skin”

“I’m with you until the weather changes, because the love is that strong.”

Last week, Lil Peep and XXXTENTACION’s posthumous collaboration “Falling Down” arrived, marking just one of a handful of Peep tracks that have surfaced since his death from an accidental drug overdose in November 2017. The song was met with some controversy, as it originally featured Peep’s friend and collaborator Makonnen instead. Today, Makonnen dropped the original version of the song, titled “Sunlight On Your Skin,” and he hopped on Genius to break down the lyrics in a series of verified annotations.

In a recent interview with XXL Makonnen explained that the track was recorded in London while the two artists were working together on a joint album. “Me and Peep’s version… we were kinda talking to each other, answering each other,” he said. In a verified annotation, Makonnen further breaks down the idea of “Sunlight On Your Skin” as an intimate conversation between himself and Peep:

Makonnen clears up some confusion regarding the song’s lyrics, explaining that he and Peep opted not to use Makonnen’s nickname on the song to make it broader:

He also explained that lyrics on the second verse are meant to reflect the idea that love will live forever, even if people don’t:

Although Makonnen and Peep were working on a collaborative project before the rapper’s death last year, this is the first song by the two artists that’s gotten an official release. Thus far, there’s been no official word on when to expect more music from Peep, so fans will have to wait and see what’s in store next.
