“It’s not what they’re talking about.”

Meek Mill’s new album Wins & Losses officially drops this Friday, and its title has drawn some attention. Coming in the wake of his highly publicized beef with Drake back in 2015 and his recent breakup with Nicki Minaj, many fans speculated that Meek’s album title seems to reference these situations as “losses” in his life.

However, in a new interview with Atlanta’s Street 94.5, Meek clarified that the title actually comes from a more personal place:

I just wanted to give people a real perspective on my life, what we call wins and what we call losses. I lost my case. We lost Lil' Snupe… Where we come from that’s a loss. When we talking Ls and Ws, when you get an L it means you’ve got life in jail or something like that. It’s critical. It’s not what they’re talking about. So I wanted to give my perspective on it, let people know what I’ve been through to even put me into this position right here that molded me into this man today.

Louisiana rapper Lil' Snupe was signed to Meek Mill’s Dreamchasers record label when he was shot and killed in 2013. He was just 18 years old. Meek also references his legal case, which stems from his arrest for unlawful possession of a firearm and assaulting a police officer when he was 18. He’s since been found in violation of his probation several times; he served time in jail in late 2014 and spent another few months under house arrest early last year.

Wins & Losses drops on Friday, July 21 and is set to feature Young Thug, Lil Uzi Vert, Chris Brown, Future, The-Dream, and more.
