Meek Mill Used Soulja Boy’s “Kiss Me Thru The Phone” Lyrics To Impress Girls From Prison

The song went No. 3 in 2009 and was sold thousands of ringtones.

Soulja Boy’s comedic performance on The Breakfast Club yesterday has shot his name back into the headlines, with artists across the spectrum offering their opinions about the rapper’s influence on hip-hop. During the interview, Soulja Boy repeatedly claimed that he had the “biggest comeback of 2018,” eclipsing that of Tyga and Meek Mill. While Tyga weighed in by comparing their streaming stats, Meek took a gentler approach by reflecting on how Soulja Boy has impacted him.

According to Meek, he used to use lyrics to Soulja Boy’s 2008 hit, “Kiss Me Thru the Phone,” to impress girls while he was in prison:

Meek served one year in prison stemming from a 2007 arrest for illegal gun possession, a charge that has continued to follow him over a decade later.

On “Kiss Me Thru the Phone,” Soulja Boy and R&B singer Sammie try to romance a girl they can’t be with:

Baby, you know that I miss you, I wanna get with you tonight
But I cannot baby girl and that’s the issue
Girl, you know I miss you, I just wanna kiss you
But I can’t right now so baby kiss me thru the phone

Soulja Boy even drops a reference to the famous outlaw couple Bonnie and Clyde:

You can be my Bonnie, I can be your Clyde
You could be my wife, text me, call me

The song peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2009, and was hugely popular as a ringtone at a time when that was still a major revenue source for the music industry.
