My Chemical Romance & Rage Against The Machine’s Music Spikes On Genius After Reunion Announcements

Rage’s catalog surged 266 percent overnight, while MCR saw a 158 percent spike.

Rock bands My Chemical Romance and Rage Against the Machine both announced reunion concerts recently, causing longtime fans and new listeners alike to check out each band’s catalog on streaming services. Naturally, these music fans flocked to Genius to look up their favorite lyrics, too.

MCR’s catalog saw a 158 percent overnight surge in total Genius pageviews after the emo band announced its reunion show at the Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles on December 20. The group’s discography also experienced a 226 percent week-on-week increase in total pageviews.

After announcing more shows, interest in MCR’s music remains high. Its catalog has averaged 13,348 total daily pageviews in November compared to 5,418 in October.

This pageview spike was led by MCR’s most recent studio album, 2010’s Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys, which saw a 242 percent increase overnight and 296 percent week-on-week increase, beating out the group’s already-popular LPs, 2004’s Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge and 2006’s The Black Parade.

However, another one of the group’s signature songs, “I’m Not Okay (I Promise),” experienced the largest week-on-week pageview increase at 299 percent.

This pageview spike was led by Rage’s most recent studio album, 1999’s The Battle of Los Angeles, which experienced a 344 percent overnight increase and 158 percent week-on-week increase.

Billboard reported similar results for MCR and Rage’s catalogs on streaming services during the tracking week ending November 7.

MCR’s catalog saw a 98 percent increase in total US on-demand streams, propelling to The Black Parade back onto the Billboard 200 at No. 92. The album also reached No. 15 on the Top Rock Albums chart, where it was joined by Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge at No. 49.

Several MCR songs also entered the Hot Rock Songs chart, where “Welcome to the Black Parade” debuted at No. 6 alongside “Teenagers” (No. 16), “Helena” (No. 19), and “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” (No. 21).

Meanwhile, Rage’s catalog surged 48 percent on streaming services, allowing 1992’s Rage Against the Machine to hit No. 42 on the Top Rock Albums chart and “Killing in the Name” to enter Hot Rock Songs at No. 15.
