Kendrick takes a hands-on approach to Q’s music.

ScHoolboy Q’s latest album, CrasH Talk, doesn’t include any guest verses from Kendrick Lamar, but his name still appears in the writing credits throughout the project. In a new interview with The Breakfast Club, Q explained that Kendrick was credited for his hands-on approach throughout the album.

After explaining that he doesn’t do anything without the approval of Jay Rock, Kendrick, and Ab-Soul, Q broke down Kendrick’s involvement.

“He have credits on all my shit because I’ll do the lyrics and I do everything, and he’ll hear something [like], "Drop the beat out hard. Cut this verse off. You did this verse too long,‘” Q said. “I used to be his hype man, so I think he just feel like he’s obligated to always help me or some shit… He pretty much do all my ad libs and song placements and stuff like that.”

Kendrick has six writing credits on CrasH Talk. This includes the project’s singles—“Numb Numb Juice,” “CHopstix,” and “CrasH”—as well as “Drunk,” “5200,” and “Floating.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Q said CrasH Talk isn’t meant to appeal to any specific audience. “I always catered to people on all my albums like Oxy and Blank Face,” he explained. “This album I was just being me, like this is what I’m on. This is how I’m rocking. That’s just what it is.”

He also cosigned viral LA rapper Blueface and touched on the album’s closing track, “Attention,” in which Q raps about receiving praise from JAY-Z, Nas, and Dr. Dre.

“Maybe because he’s my favorite rapper and he had to spit something back and he probably spit some cap at me,” Q joked about Nas calling him the best rapper. “He probably gassed me up, I don’t know.”
