An earlier version of the track was produced by Sounwave, Baby Keem, & Cardo.

On Wednesday night, ScHoolboy Q returned with his new single, “Numb Numb Juice.” The track is produced by Nez & Rio, Baby Keem, and DJ Fu, but it turns out Sounwave, Baby Keem, and Cardo handled production on an earlier version. In an interview with DJBooth, DJ Fu said he was called in to replace a sample from the classic survival horror game, Silent Hill, after TDE couldn’t secure clearance for it.

“Moosa [Tiffith] had hit me up like, ‘I got the a capella for the single, but we can’t clear the sample, can you re-do it?’” DJ Fu remembered. “Fifteen other producers had a chance to do it, so they played through all the producers and mine was the best one.”

However, ScHoolboy decided the beat needed some more changes. “Q was like, ‘Hey man, I’m ‘bout to have another studio session. Can you come wrap this up? Can you make another melody and change it and make it better?’” the Ear Drummers-signed producer said. “I went to the studio, sat there for 10 hours, and got it right.”

Silent Hill, which was released on the Sony Playstation in 1999, is a pioneering game in the survival horror genre. It spawned an entire franchise including sequels to the game, a visual novel, and a 2006 feature film titled Silent Hill.

Although DJ Fu doesn’t mention the company by name, Silent Hill is published by Konami. The game’s soundtrack is composed by 山岡晃 (Akira Yamaoka).

Elsewhere in the interview, DJ Fu described the TDE rapper’s upcoming album as “ScHoolboy 2.0.” He added that the project gives listeners a window into ScHoolboy’s personal life.
