Selena Gomez Shares Her Pain (And Hopes To Ease Yours) On New Song “My Mind & Me”

The song arrives a day ahead of her new documentary of the same name.

Tomorrow marks the premiere of Selena Gomez’s anticipated new documentary on Apple TV+. It’s called My Mind & Me, and that’s also the name of the single Gomez released today in connection with the film. Within hours of landing on streaming services, the confessional ballad climbed into the Top 5 on the Genius Top Songs chart.

Gomez wrote the song with Amy Allen, Jon Bellion, Michael Pollack, Jordan K. Johnson, and Stefan Johnson—the latter two of whom are part of The Monsters & Strangers, the team that handled production. “My Mind & Me” starts off with just voice and piano. Gomez talk-sings in a kind of nervous conversational style, inviting listeners to learn about what her life has really been like behind all the tabloid headlines.

Wanna hear a part to my story? I tried to hide in the glory
And sweep it under the table so you would never know
Sometimes I feel like an accident, people look when they’re passin’ it
Never check on the passenger, they just want the free show

My Mind & Me is slated to examine the singer, songwriter, actress, and former Disney star’s struggles with lupus and various mental health issues. In the pre-chorus, Gomez adopts a lighter, more relaxed delivery and seemingly describes what it’s like to live with conditions like bipolar disorder, which she’s been diagnosed with.

Yeah, I’m constantly
Tryna fight somethin’ that my eyes can’t see

In the chorus, Gomez again articulates the feeling of fighting against your own thoughts.

My mind and me
We don’t get along sometimes
And it gets hard to breathe

But Gomez isn’t feeling sorry for herself. She wouldn’t change a thing about her life. Everything she’s been through has put her in a position to record songs like “My Mind & Me,” which might provide solace for people in similar situations.

And all of the crashin’ and burnin’ and breakin’, I know now
If somebody sees me like this, then they won’t feel alone now

In the second verse, Gomez worries that she’s a “burden” to others. Everyone’s got problems—why should anyone care about hers? But she comes back to the idea that her platform as a public figure affords her the opportunity to help those in need.

But if I pull back the curtain, then maybe someone who’s hurtin’
Will be a little more certain they’re not the only one lost

“My Mind & Me” is Gomez’s first new music since her 2021 EP Revelación. The song arrived with a lyric video illustrated and animated by Elizabeth Laferrière.
