The Killers just dropped their sixth studio album, Imploding the Mirage, which was pushed back from its original May release date due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The project follows 2017’s Wonderful Wonderful and is the band’s first full-length release without contributions from lead guitarist Dave Keuning.
Co-produced by Shawn Everett and Jonathan Rado, Imploding the Mirage features appearances from k.d. lang and Weyes Blood. Ahead of its release, The Killers shared four singles: “Caution,” “Fire in Bone,” “My Own Soul’s Warning,” and “Dying Breed.”
In an interview with Rolling Stone, lead singer Brandon Flowers explained how hearing Vampire Weekend’s Father of the Bride inspired the musical direction of the album.
“I realized I couldn’t continue on the path that I was on,” he explained. “It reminded me of the way I felt when I heard Is This It [by the Strokes]. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I can’t just phone this in. If Ezra [Koenig] is doing this, I need to up my game a little bit.’ I was inspired and jealous. For me those, two emotions combined really light a fire under me.”
