Post Malone Interpolates Kansas’ Hit “Dust In The Wind” On “Otherside”

The refrain uses the melody from the prog rock band’s Top 10 single.

Post Malone released his sophomore album beerbongs & bentleys on Friday. One of the songs, “Otherside,” interpolates the melody from Kansas‘ hit song “Dust in the Wind.”

The acoustic track “Dust in the Wind” is taken from Kansas' 1977 album Point of Know Return. It features production from Jeff Glixman and is the American progressive rock band’s only Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 single, peaking at No. 6 in 1978. The song reflects upon the themes of mortality and one’s insignificance within the universe:

I close my eyes, only for a moment
And the moment’s gone
All my dreams pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind
All they are is dust in the wind

On the refrain of “Otherside,” Post interpolates the melody from “Dust in the Wind” as he sings about being haunted by memories of his ex-girlfriend. Genius contributor Mayhem-til-am breaks it down in an annotation:

beerbongs & bentleys is off to a hot start, breaking Spotify’s global and U.S. records for opening day streams. On the final track “Sugar Wraith, Post pays tribute to Sugar Ray by interpolating their 1997 hit “Fly.”
