“This is really a song about being complicit in things that you later regret.”

Last summer, college student and singer-songwriter Penelope Scott uploaded two snippets of her song, “Rät,” to TikTok, calling it a “breakup letter to the tech cult that is Silicon Valley.” The song was still a work in progress at the time, but it quickly took off online and became one of her biggest hits on streaming thus far.

The self-produced track, which appears on her most recent album, Public Void, has racked up nearly 30 million streams on Spotify alone. On the song, Scott rejects the assumption that Big Tech has had a positive influence on our society.
