Just over three weeks after Childish Gambino “This is America” beat out Drake’s “Back to Back” as the fastest song to reach one million pageviews on Genius, the record has been broken again. This time, it’s Pusha-T, whose savage Drake diss track “The Story of Adidon” hit the one million mark in 41 hours. By contrast, “This is America” took 45 hours to reach the one million mark, while “Back to Back” hit it in 48 hours.
The song has already earned 5.4 million SoundCloud streams since its release less than 48 hours ago, and curiosity about the track’s targeted bars seems to have drawn intense fan interest in the lyrics. Diss tracks typically over-perform on Genius out of the gate, as evidenced by “Back to Back” and Kendrick Lamar’s namedrop-heavy verse on Big Sean’s “Control.” In fact, the rapid success of “This is America” was somewhat of an anomaly amongst these tracks.
The huge buzz around “The Story of Adidon” as well as Drake’s “Duppy Freestyle” has also caused a spike in interest for older diss tracks on Genius. From May 25 (the day before “Duppy Freestyle”) to May 30 (the day after “The Story of Adidon”), these songs experienced a pageview bump between 6.8 and 1,010 percent:
“The Story of Adidon” still has a ways to go before it can hope to reach Genius' All-Time Top Songs chart, joining the likes of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” (21.7 million) Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” (12.9 million) and Eminem’s “Rap God.” Still, it seems the song has already made its mark. Interestingly, “The Story of Adidon” alone has earned more pageviews than the entirety of his new album DAYTONA, which has managed around 900,000 pageviews across all songs.
